日本における最高学府の2トップの一角として知られる京都大学。偏差値では東大に水をあけられ、一橋や東工大に並ばれた感はあるものの、京大がこれまで積み重ねてきた研究業績を考えれば、やはり東大と双璧をなしていることは間違いない。
今回おとずれたのは、その京都大学近くの廃墟である。その廃墟は光華寮といい、2010年まで中国系留学生向けの京都大学の寮として機能していた。この日、京阪電車の出町柳駅から今出川通りを歩いて京大方面へ向かって歩いていった。京大の研究棟などを横目に見ながら、少しづつ東へ進んでいく。

光華寮がある場所
光華寮があるのは京都大学から少し北東に行ったところ。ちょうど吉田山から今出川通りを挟んで反対側にある。
吉田山を右手に見ながら、いよいよ左京区北白川の一角にある光華寮のある場所に近づいていく。
吉田山の前にはお地蔵さまの姿が。大仏といった方が正しいかもしれない。
さて、光華寮の場所の目印になるのは、今出川通りと志賀越道(しがごえみち)が斜めにクロスしている場所。ちなみに志賀越道を東へ行くと、山中越えを経て、その名の通り滋賀県へと入る。
光華寮は今出川通りから見て、志賀越道よりも一本西にある道に入ると見えてくる。

光華寮事件
光華寮を語る上で、触れておかなければならないのが光華寮事件(光華寮訴訟)である。光華寮は京都大学の前身、京都帝国大学が留学生向けに建てて賃借しており、1950年に台湾(中華民国)駐日代表団が購入した。しかし、1965年の文化大革命をきっかけにして、寮生間で対立が起こり、所有者の台湾駐日代表団が中国人留学生8人に対して立ち退きを命じたのだ。
何やら難しい話だが、結局外交問題にまで発展してしまったらしい。

廃墟としての価値
さて、光華寮、結局2010年に閉鎖され、その後廃墟と化した。国際的な問題にまで発展した光華寮、さすがは只物ではない。廃墟となってもその名を轟かせており、数多くの廃墟マニアを惹きつけている。
もちろん私もそのうちの一人、ワクワクしながら建物へと近づいていく。コンクリートは良い感じに変色しており、コンクリートと合う形で木が無造作に伸びている。
階段は錆びつき、如何にも古びた廃墟といった感じ。窓も外れた箇所が多くなっていて薄気味悪さを感じさせてくれる。
近くで見ると、まるでコンクリートに真っ黒い穴が開いたかのよう。中には本当に人が居ないのだろうか。誰かが建物から外を見ているかも・・・そんな気になった。
廃墟の隣にあるのは現代風の学生向けマンション。その対比が何とも言えぬ。
次は住宅街を回って、反対側から。なかなか小ぎれいな住宅街。
植え込みもしっかりと手入れされており、さすがは京都といった感じ。
反対側から見ると、建物に蔦が巻きついている。夜来ると不気味そうである。そういえば心霊の噂もあったような。
中は絶対に入らせるか、とばかりに一面に金属塀が建てられている。
張り紙を見ると、過去に光華寮に侵入した人に逮捕者が出たらしい。噂によると逮捕覚悟で入りたい廃墟マニアというのは、けっこう居るらしい。
夕日に照らされた光華寮の廃墟を眺めながら、その場をあとにした。
